What does a typical day in your life look like?

I have two school-age kids to look after, so when we're not in lockdown I start my day getting everyone ready for school. Once I've walked them to school, I have the rest of my morning to work on various commissions and projects, or taking finished projects to the post office, followed by maybe an hour of housework. I fetch the kids home then cook dinner for everyone, and I get another hour for drawing before bath time. As I'm a night owl, once the rest of the house is asleep I might spend a couple more hours on paperwork, sketching, or looking for new commissions.

Who inspires you?

Bob Ross.

What is your favorite quote?

"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." - William Morris.

Alternately, "You've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I do calligraphy, illustration, lino-cutting, map-making, book-binding, leatherwork and woodwork.

As an artist, what made you get into art?

I have always been into art. I had a crisis of confidence at 17, and studied history at university instead, but in my early 20's I started sketching again and things grew from there. One of the things that brings me the most peace is to fully focus my hands and brain on one thing.

What is your favorite thing about art commissions?

My favourite part is the possibilities inherent in working at someone's request - you never know what will be asked for next, or what the end result might be.

What is your favorite piece of artwork? (from someone living)

One of the highlights of my working year is taking a full day to explore the degree show at the Duncan of Jordanstone art school just down the road, and recent highlights have included spectacular work from Isla Valentine Wade, Courtney Szabo, and Amanda Lambert.

What is your favorite piece of artwork? (from someone dead)

That can change from hour to hour! Some of my favourites are Rembrandt's elderly portraits, Joan Eardley and Turner's landscapes, Margaret MacDonald's designs, and the illustration work of Moebius.
